Cooked vs Raw in 11.5 on Linux
Posted in 2010
A DBA moving to IDS 11.5 on SLES 11 x64 asked whether cooked (filesystem) chunks now perform about as well as raw devices on Linux, and how to create dbspaces on cooked files. Replies were opinions rather than a definitive answer: one poster still prefers raw, and if using cooked prefers SAN over local disk; the practical how-to given was to touch an empty file in the data directory and point onspaces at it, which creates the chunk at the specified size. Another poster favoured raw devices because root users can accidentally delete filesystem files. No benchmark data or firm conclusion on performance was recorded.

SLES 11x64, IDS 11.5 x64 (unknown sub number since I don't have the disc in my hands yet). We will be going to IDS 11.5 soon and it has been recommended that on our Linux platform we use cooked files instead of raw ones. 2 questions: is the performance roughly equivalent now? I've read posts from 3-4 years ago that said raw will always be better but I wasn't sure. Also how does one go about setting the dbspaces up using cooked files? I've had experience setting up raw files for the chunks but if cooked is the way to go then I'm gonna need a pointer in the right direction. I basically touch a file in the directory used for the data and then use
onspaces to that file like a link to raw. That will create the space
size of the file.

I still like to set up the raw disks, otherwise your root access people have
permission to delete your file system when you least expect it. There was a
conference presentation about setting that up.
