Pre 6.0 engines communicated via pipes, while post 6.0 engines communicate via semaphores (which are apparently faster). It's possible to use 4.1x tools against 6+ engines, just you have to use a thing called a "Relay Module" which translates from the pipe-based communications to the semaphore method. This slows things down a bit.
