Multi Processor Performance (example myimport)
Posted in 2008

I am upgrading from a single processor Sun E250(1GB mem, 3 disks) to an 8
processor Sun T5120 (32gb mem, 4 disks). During the single processor
myexport -p I get 100% cpu usage and goodly disk usage, all as I might
expect.
I have never had a multiprocessor before so I was hoping someone could give
me a few tips.
In onconfig I did set
MULTIPROCESSOR 1
NUMCPUVPS 8
SINGLE_CPU_VP 0The LRU's seem to be self adjusting themselves.
Myexport -e -p starts off with a lot of tasks and slows down to 20 or so for
most of whats left of the restore.
But as myimport is running with the -p option I hardly see the cpu usage
move above 1% and my wait i/o is close to zero. My disk seems to be moving
pretty good and some of the work is getting done in a time that is about
what the myexport -p speed seemed to be, maybe just a touch slower. I have
no idea what memory usage but with no users it should not be bad. I am not
saying I have a problem, I am just looking for some basic starter tips.
This makes me wonder what other people might start off with as tuning
parameters when getting started in a new server.
Many Many thanks!

Hi Tim,
I assume you are using IDS10 or more.
Setting multiprocessor to 1 is right thing.
Have you set VPCLASS?
Please find more info below how you can set vpclass and enable more physical
cpu for clients.
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/idshelp/v10/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.ad
min.doc/admin242.htm
I hope setting VPCLASS will help.
Thanks,
Sunil

You could push NUMCPUVPS to 16 or even 24 if you need more parallelism out
of the engine, the processors you have are fast enough for up to 3 CPU VPs
per core. Setting for 8 is a good starting point though. The other
settings are correct, but note that LRUS are not self adjusting. Set LRUs
so that your BR (Bufwaits Ratio) is below 7, a good rule of thumb is to plan
one LRU per user session if you can get away with it. If you have more
users than the max setting for your release of IDS then just max it out.
The fact that a full out -p load with myimport is not not even exercising
the CPUS is a good sign that you can indeed handle more CPU VPs to put more
load through the system in parallel.
Myexport will benefit less from parallelism as it's writing to a single
structure while myimport my be taking advantage of your dbspace layout to
spread the load more.

I have a similar server (big lump of external disk however). The
processor is 8 core with each core capable of running 8 threads, and
actually appears at the O/S level as 64 CPUs. Suggestions from a
recent tech day is that you could go up to 56 CPUVPS and (perhaps) pin
them from CPU 8 up. I have started with 20 CPUVPs with no issues and
will be trying higher figures later.
I running variable pages sizes (2k for the mandatory structures and 8k
for data and indexes) and have 127 LRUs spread across the two Busffer
Pools. Seemed to run pretty well for some large data loads and index
builds but havn't got comparisons, and havn't rally stressed it.
