Can ISQL 4.10 connect to 11.70.TC5?
Posted in 2012
Poster asked whether the ancient ISQL/SE 4.10 (with INFORMIX-NET and Relay Module) could connect to IDS 11.70.TC5. Replies said the wire protocols have been largely stable since OnLine 5.06, so it would probably work but is an unsupported combination — best to just test it. The poster did test it and reported success (and good speed), using INFORMIXSQLHOSTS set to \\\\\\\\ and DBNETTYPE=tcp/ip over local loopback. Limitation noted: stored procedures can't be run from the 4.10 client, since ISQL 4.10 predates SPL support (added in OnLine 5.x); triggers could still be created server-side.

I have ISQL/SE 4.10 with INFORMIX.NET and Relay Module. I would like to know if it can connect to 11.70.TC5?
Most likely it will work, but that's not 100% certain. The communications protocols Informix users have been pretty much the same since OnLine 5.06 IB, but if your ISQL version predates that I don't know. Test it? Art Art S. The ISQL 4.10 Release Notes say: C) COMPATIBILITY OF APPLICATION TOOLS AND DATABASE ENGINES ======================================================= The 4.1 Windows application tools can use either a remote 4.1 or 5.x database engine via Informix-Net PC. No change is required in the 4.1 application to access a 5.x database engine. However, some functionality available in the 5.x database engine will not be available to the 4.1-based application. For example, even though the 5.x database engine supports stored procedures, the 4.x application tools do not have the capability to use stored procedures. The general rule is that all functionality available to the application tool in the 4.1 release is available to the tool in the 5.x database engine, but that functionality available to 5.x application tools cannot be taken advantage of by the 4.1 application tools.
Since the notes mention 5.x, then the notes must post-date 1990, but not necessarily by very much. There's been versions 6-11 since then (we can debate some finer points). The chances are that ISQL 4.10 will be able to connect to IDS 11.x via a relay module (which was mentioned in the original posting in this thread please keep enough context for people to be able to understand the original question), but it is not a supported combination. If it works, great. If it doesn't, then the only answer will be "sorry; you'll have to change something". On Wed, Aug 8, 2012 at 12:43 PM, FRANK J. The 4.10 Release Notes are dated 24-FEB-1994.

I got it working and its really fast!.. However, I cannot execute stored
procedures from the client side, but I can create triggers on the server side.
Perhaps I could remotely execute dbaccess commands to run SPL's?

ISQL 4.10 never supported stored procedures; they were added to OnLine 5.x.
