Installation Woes IDS 9.4
Posted in 2007
A user downloaded the IDS 9.4 for Linux (SuSE 10) package from the IIUG site, and after unzipping was left with a .cpi/.cio file he didn't know how to install. Replies explained it's a cpio archive: extract with "cpio -icvdumB < file.cpi", ideally run from $INFORMIXDIR, and one poster noted that on Linux the -c flag should be dropped ("cpio -ivdum < file"). Both attempts failed with "cpio: premature end of file/archive", suggesting a truncated or corrupted download (possibly from unzipping on Windows/transferring non-binary). The user said he'd re-download directly on the Linux box; no confirmed resolution is recorded in the thread.

Hi Group, I had downloaded IDS 9.4 for Linux from IIUG site after registering at the site. It was in Zipped format and unzipping it gave me a .cio file. How do I go about installing IDS 9.4 on my Linux ( Suse 10 ). I guess some of you must have faced the same scenario, but the very fact that the download link still exists on the IIUG site suggests that there are some workarounds for installing on this problematic file format. Please help. Is that .cpio or .ico ? I'm not familiar with a .cio format. Hi Allen, Try the following: cpio -icvdumB < name.cio Where "name" is the name of the cio file. Also, it is easiest if you unarchive the file in the $INFORMIXDIR directory. It sounds like you do not have the file intact. Did you unarchive it on a Windows box to get the cpio file? Did you ftp it to your server using binary? You are better off unarchiving/uncompressing the original file on the server where you will be installing the software. Hi Larry, There is a possibility of that being the cause of the error. But then, i downloaded a zip file from IIUG site to my XP machine. I unzipped the file to get the CPI file. I then copied the zip file from to my Linux Box and unzipped the ZIP = file to get CPI file again. Well i will try downloading the zip directly from the IIUG site to my = Linux Box,=20 but then again it shouldn't be the problem in the right sense. In the meantime i will start downloading the file once again. Has anyone really tried the "cpio -icvdumB < IDS2000.cpi " and got a = favorable answer...i was wondering... infact a google on it gives me the same solution , but not a working = one. Allen, I have seen this error once before when the cpi file was written using Solaris and I was trying to extract it on AIX. When I have time - hopefully sometime today - I will download IDS2000.cpi and attempt to extract it using my Solaris box. I once got a .cio file too. If I remember it right, it was not a cpio Archive, it was a ZIPped cpio Archive. So, please rename from .cio to .zip (or .gz for GNU Zip) and try to unzip the file Regards Joerg Am Fr, 13.04.2007, 10:27, schrieb allen.philip@wipro.com: > Sure Mike , let us know the result. > > -----Original Message----- > From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of > Mike Badar > Sent: Thursday, April 12, 2007 11:32 PM > To: ids@iiug.org > Subject: RE: Installation Woes IDS 9.4 [8882] > > Allen, > > I have seen this error once before when the cpi file was written using > Solaris and I was trying to extract it on AIX. Joerg, Renamed the .cio file to .zip file and tried unzipping it, I got the following error message. " End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not a Zip file, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part Zip file. " . This I tried on my Windows XP machine. Joerg, I even tried the same on my Linux machine too. Well everyone has been telling me to do the rename method on some file or the other but nothing worked, but I suppose Mike had a different point to make and lets just wait for Mike to come up with the result. Hi Mike, how did the installation go on your Soloris machine? Greetings, OK, maybe I haven't had enough coffee this morning. It took me 15 minutes to find the link to IBM's site where I could download a trial version of IDS; this is the route I took: Home page --> Resources --> Online Informix Resources --> IBM Informix Sites --> 1st bullet under IBM Informix sites I hope there is a more direct way to get to: http://www-306.ibm.com/software/data/informix/downloads.html In my opinion, if we are trying to encourage people to give IDS a road test for free, the convoluted traversal of links to get to the IBM site is unacceptable. Why not put a "big" icon on the home page that says: "Try a High Performance OLTP DB server for FREE!" I want IDS to prosper. The above process does not bode well for swaying users to join the Informix family. I'm not trying to place blame on anyone. I think we can - and should - do better, right? so guys, after all the hoopla I caused, I guess I better leave this conversation politely by Saying a big thank you for all those who helped me in this endeavor ..... downloading and unzipping hehe :0) Thank you Mike and Andreas, but I already made my boss understand things won't work. I had a tiring week guess It's time for take a break ..... We lock horns again, when I start doing a simple query statement on the IDS Database. Too much said by the Rookie Oracle DBA on a windows environment. Allen, I too came to DB2 and Informix from Oracle, Sybase and SQL Server world. As a seasoned DBA and database professional, we should presume that install and config for each database is different. Information to download and run code is fluid for all the databases. If you want to be learning and uptodate on a database, read some history and current info about it always. For example, IDS 11 will be released soon and you can do Linux download and play with it. I still read about SQL Server 2005 SP1. I do not know if Wipro has partner world id from IBM. That way, you have access to most of the code from the website. Please check on that at first. You may want to call IBM for support. That would help you too. Those are few of my thoughts. I still read about SQL Server 2005 SP1. I do not know if Wipro has partner world id from IBM. That way, you have access to most of the code from the website. Please check on that at first. You may want to call IBM for support. That would help you too. Those are few of my thoughts.
