Cursor & Update Statistics

If I start running a program that uses tables where update statistics is very old, and I then run update statistics on these tables after the program has started (initialising a main cursor and then doing work inside the main cursor) - will the program speed up, or should I run update statistics before I start running the program ? I suppose it depends on how the program works. If it prepares the queries before the update statistics you will not get better performance. If it keeps sending the queries without preparing them you'll probably notice the difference. Regards
