Multiple onconfig profiles for different workloads
Posted in 2010
Topics: Server Administration
Can I define specific sets of parameters for onconfig, store them in seperate profiles and make a particular profile effective depending on the date, weekday, time of day, without using cron to execute them? Examples: Mondays at 0900: profile1 {low mode} Mondays at 1100: profile2 {peak mode} Mondays at 1700: profile3 {business day closing mode} Mondays at 1900: profile4 {single user admin mode} 2010-04-30 at 2200: profile5 {end of month mode}
You can always shutdown the engine, rename the correct ONCONFIG file, then restart the engine from a cron. so yes. Odd, but doable. You can also, if you license the MACH11 code, set up a shared disk secondary server with different parameters to share the database on disk and server users with a different set of queries. So, one server for OLTP and another for DSS queries. Art Art S. Can't changes be made without bringing down the engine, say like with onmode?
The reason is for optimizing the server depending on the workload involved
during different dayes, days and time, like the examples I gave in initial
question.
Some parameters can be changed on the fly, not most. See the documentation
of the onmode utility in the Adminstrator's Reference manual.

some things can be changed via onmode and those things can be scheduled=
via
dbcron.
