Re: flagship sunk

This is not a technical support thread but a cross-posted flame/opinion exchange about Oracle versus Informix. Participants argue over whether TPC benchmarks mean anything (one poster calls them worthless marketing fodder), whether Oracle's TimesTen acquisition will transform transaction benchmark numbers, and whether Oracle's commercial success reflects product quality, with jabs about Microsoft, Rolls-Royces and Paris Hilton. No technical problem is posed and no resolution is recorded; the thread simply ends with the Oracle advocate agreeing to drop the subject in the Informix group.

As a marketing ploy for the child-like behaviour of some management obviously they work or no one would spend money on them. Absolutely. There are plenty of people making huge sums of money selling garbage. Though pointing to Microsoft would have better made your case. The quantity of sales is never a measure of quality ... want a cheap Rolls or Bentley? ... but it is equally true that Oracle making money could very well be related to the fact that their product is excellent. -- Daniel A. Actually, it's very easy to buy a Rolls or a Bentley on the cheap. And it's not entirely true that they are the byword for quality that you might think either. > ... but it is equally true that Oracle making money > could very well be related to the fact that their product is excellent. You could almost hear the slams coming your way couldn't you! 8-) Oracle has excellent marketing but I think you create a whole new set of opinions on the 'excellence' of their software. Maybe the real product is the marketing...

Maybe the real product > is the marketing... I didn't mention the product and wouldn't have had Obnoxio not opened the door and invited me in. But the dismissing of Oracle due to quality, while well deserved in versions 7 and 8.0, really got a bit jaded with 8.1.7 and with 9.2 and above is more an indication of having no clue about the current state of the product line than anything else. And with that I will not comment again about Oracle in the Informix group unless Obnoxio, or some other lovely soul, wishes to again provide an invitation to do so. -- Daniel A.
