Error -202: An illegal character has been found...

Whenever I try to insert a newline character in a CHAR or VARCHAR column I get this message: "Error -202: An illegal character has been found in the statement." Does anyone know any way to solve this problem ??? Is there a escape character available in insert's or update's ? This is Informix ONLINE version 5. Thanks in advance.
