Number of Pages per Partition
Posted in 2007
A user on IDS 9.40 was hitting the 16,777,215-page-per-partition limit and asked whether IDS 10 or 11.1 raised it. Respondents (including an IBM kernel developer) confirmed the limit is unchanged and no change was planned. Two workarounds were offered: fragment the table into multiple partitions, which from version 10 onward can all reside in the same dbspace, and use larger page sizes (4K/8K/16K instead of Solaris's 2K) so each partition holds more data. The poster accepted these as reasons to upgrade.

Hello All, We have occasionally hit the maximum number of pages per partition (16,777,215) in our IDS 9.40.UC4 instance (Sun 2.8). I have searched in vain to see if this limit changes in 10.0 or 11.1. It looks like it is still the same limit in 10.0, but I am not sure. Does anyone know if this limit changes in IDS 10.0 or 11.1? Thanks Rob Schmitz Embarq Data Management rob.b.schmitz@embarq.com http://www.embarq.com/
The limit has not changed. You have to option of fragmenting the table into multiple fragments and in 10 & 11 the fragments can all live in the same dbspace, so the limit is really not any physical limit on table size. IB there are no plans to overcome that limit. Another work-around is to rebuild the table with maybe 8k pages ( IDS 10). That gives you less pages per "partition". The limit on one partition is still the same - 16 million pages - with 10.00 and 11.10, but you can create multiple partitions for the same ta= ble in a single dbspace from 10.00 onwards. Thanks everyone for the information and suggestions. The new capabilities to partition within a dbspace and specify page sizes in 10 and 11 are more reasons to upgrade!
