Re: problem with isql
Posted in 1996
ISQL 6.0x is a 4.1x product with with the 6.0x connectivity libraries. As
a 4.1x product, there are lots of things it doesn't understand which were
introduced after the 4.1x Engines. Things like stored procedures,
triggers, fragmentation, etc. However, most of the new ESQL/C facilities
can be handled by PREPARE, and since ISQL uses PREPARE on each statement it
does not recognise (it only recognises LOAD, UNLOAD, OUTPUT, INFO, CHECK
TABLE, REPAIR TABLE that I can think of), it actually handles most of these
statements. However, it does not know anything about CREATE PROCEDURE FROM
"file", and since virtually every stored procedure contains at least one
semi-colon before the END PROCEDURE, it does not handle CREATE PROCEDURE
procname statements either. The CONNECT, DISCONNECT and SET CONNECTION
statements are not preparable -- basically, they tell you how to get to an
engine, but prepared statements are handled by an engine -- so ISQL does
not handle them at all. DB-Access, by contrast, is a 7.1x product when
released with the 7.1x Engines, and it does understand these changes.
Consequently, for SQL script interpretation, if you are using fancy
statements (those using facilities beyond those in 4.1x), you should also
use DB-Access, though 95% or more of the time you will get away with it in
ISQL. ISQL should be used for its forms, reports and user menu facilities.
Use DB-Access for low-level database adminstration work.
In your particular case, you can probably circumvent the problem by using:
isql databasename@servername - <<!
SELECT * FROM Table;!
However, that may not suffice as a general solution for you; use DB-Access.
