Well, I'm not an expert, but the abridged version is: 1. Informix is easier to install, use, deploy and administer and requires less resource and hardware to keep alive. 2. Oracle is easier to sell to management. There are more Oracle people about because Oracle needs more people per server. From a performance perspective, they both claim the "best" performance. Oracle have twice suborned TPC benchmarks by putting technology in the engine purely to make it do the TPC benchmarks better and have no application in real life.
