Disk partitioning for RAW space

I am busy setting up a development server to run IDS 9.40 The server has three identical disks with software raid as follows: 1GB RAID 1 /boot 4GB RAID 1 swap 350GB RAID 5 Linux file system 236GB RAID 5 raw My question is this: Is it better to break up the raw spaces into smaller partitions? If so, why and what is the benefit? Or is it OKto allocate all 236GB raw to Informix in one go? Thanks Erhard Eiselen
I would start by reviewing Art Kagels frequent rants about RAID 5. Google this group for RAID 5. That's a pretty big /boot, I think mine is about 1MB. If you are going to use RAID, and this is a dev box, then I guess it doesn't matter that much. However, consider that Informix will increase parallelism when it has more disks to spread queries across. j. -----Original Message----- From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org]On Behalf Of Erhard Eiselen Sent: Tuesday, August 21, 2007 3:58 AM To: ids@iiug.org Subject: Disk partitioning for RAW space [9829] I am busy setting up a development server to run IDS 9.40 The server has three identical disks with software raid as follows: 1GB RAID 1 /boot 4GB RAID 1 swap 350GB RAID 5 Linux file system 236GB RAID 5 raw My question is this: Is it better to break up the raw spaces into smaller partitions? Thanks. He makes some excellent points. I've got loads of diskspace so I guess I'll do a quick re-install and switch to RAID1 > -----Original Message----- > From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On > Behalf Of Jack Parker > Sent: 21 August 2007 12:41 > To: ids@iiug.org > Subject: RE: Disk partitioning for RAW space [9830] > > I would start by reviewing Art Kagels frequent rants about > RAID 5.
