Informix V6 Usr pricing
I've finally received the pricing structure information for Informix V6 and my worse fears have been realised! We run a client server architecture using uni-processor 486 machines running SCO unix. See how the prices compare between V5 and V6... GBP ------------------ V5 Costs (List Price GBP ) ----------------- V5 Server Machine - Online Dev Class C 17+ 9060.00 I-Star Dev Class C 17+ 2260.00 = 11320.00 V5 Client Machine - I-Net R/t Class C 17+ 910.00 SQL R/t Class C 17+ 1200.00 ESQL/C R/t Class C 17+ 600.00 = 2710.00 With 12 client machines with 25 users we get a total = 43840.00 ------------------ V6 Costs (List Price GBP ) ----------------- Assumptions: 25 users on a client machine will generate an average of 30 database connections and a maximum of 35 at peak usage. This implies the server has to cope with 12*30=360 database connections. V6 Server Machine - Online Dev 360 Users 343800.00 V6 Client Machine - I-Net R/t 35 Users <price not given!> SQL R/t 35 Users 4900.00 ESQL/C R/t Class C 17+ 2625.00 = 7525.00 With 12 client machines (w/o I-Net price) = 434100.00 --------------------------------------------------------------- I know that V6 is a VERY different product... I also know that V6 isn't appropriate for my systems (at this time). BUT a price leap from 43K to 434K between V5 and V6 is UNREAL! AND I've not added in ASSURANCE.. AND I still don't know the price for I-Net on the client machines! <GRIN TIME> How about buying V5 products with unlimited licences and upgrading them to V6 at 15% of list price.... do I see a black market opportunity here? <END OF GRIN> <QUESTION TIME> How many years will V5 be supported and available under its current pricing structure? Do I invest 100000.00 to 150000.00 porting my apps to another DB because in a few years time Informix are going to want 500000.00 for me to continue to use their products? -- Paul Mahoney, X-Act Solutions Limited smail: Owlsmead, Meads Road, Little Common, Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex TN39 4SY email: ptm@xact.demon.co.uk ... pmahoney@cix.compulink.co.uk phone: +44 424 846368
