What tools are you using? Dbaccess/ISQL always converts to char anyway. In 4GL and ESQL/C the type of the result will match the type of the host variable into which you are fetching it. The same is true for CLI and ODBC. The engine automatically converts to match the bound variable. Art S. Kagel
