My name is Georges Tomazi, and I'm in charge of the international distribution of Four J's Development Tools products. > These people have a www page at www.leadtogold.com > This is the 4J compiler. That's right, LTG (which means Lead to Gold) is the official distributor for Four J's Development Tools in North America. They also market there a package called "GOOEY" which is a combination of a graphically enhanced version of I-Forms (FourGen CASE Tools) and our F4GL Compiler. > It does work, and does give you a GUI interface - of sorts. > If you compile your tried and trusted 4GL code there is however *no* > way it can become a truly event driven application. The 4GL language has not been designed as a event driven language and our primary goal was to keep a 100% compatibility with the original language. The major issue was not to release again a new programming language, but to help people having large 4GL applications to move towards the future. This target is reached, as: 1) Without any source code modification you get a true client/server graphic application running under Microsoft's Windows GUI and X11. 2) The compiler produce a highly optimized P-Code (in addition to the C code) very fast, very small, and truly portable. 3) A 4GL application can run, again without any source code change, under Microsoft Windows NT (as server). amongst other features... > There is a very good reason why Informix extended the 4GL language so > much when they made NewEra. Anyway, I'm not qualified to compare, but you forgot again the lack of 4GL compatibility... How many people can afford to rewrite from scratch their whole application ? What about retraining, loss of product maturity, multiple version maintenance, etc, etc..? Now that our primary target has been reached, we are working on enhancements and extensions of the language, new Object Oriented features and thus are looking now also for the new projects market. Stay tuned and I'm sure that you'll be surprised... -- Georges A. Tomazi | Four J's Development Tools tomazi@4js.com | URL: http://www.4js.com
