Initialization question

Hi!
I'm trying to install IDS 7.21 on UNIX.
I created file, named it 'ol_chunk' and concatenated it
to /dev/null (don't know why...
just follow the manual). And I set the
ONCONFIG parameter ROOTPATH to this file. IS it enough?
Will the oninit command create primary dbspace itself?
Thanks a lot!

It's best to use an empty file, or one which has a known contents
which will not confuse OnLine. If you created the file as an empty
file, then the cat /dev/null >ol_chunk will have done nothing.

Yes; it will allocate and scribble on the space you specify.
It's what I (usually) do when using cooked files. When I don't
do that, I use:
dd if=/dev/zero of=servername.rootdbs.c0 bs=1k count=20480
(a) That means I use a very systematic naming convention for chunk
files: using the DBSERVER parameter, the dbspace name, and the
chunk number (c0 -- m0 for it's mirror).
(b) It pre-creates the file of the correct size. OnLine still
scribbles on the file, so it isn't really buying me anything.
(c) Don't forget to set the permissions to informix/informix/660.

Just an asside. If you have several servers which are sisters, ie same data but not replicants, and you include the dbserver name as part of the chunk link names you will have trouble if you one day have to restore sister_1 and find it's backup has been trashed so you have to use the archive from sister_2!
