If it is then I think informix is in deep trouble (again). I was a heavy informix user years ago. Loved the stuff and I want to see them come back. But from what I can see to date they still have not learned some of their lessons on pricing and being open. My company eventually went to Oracle because they were far more supported in the 3rd party market and tools were cheaper. (Now their expensive as hell but its tool late, few managers see anyone else as a viable contender) I loved coding in 4gl and want to go back to it but there is no way any company will look at this as a viable strategy with new development. Not when Powerbuilder and other tools are free on run time distribution. This pricing seems to have abandoned the sector of new development and is going strictly for those with an existing code base who are looking to move to a GUI environment. For those people the cost will be less than starting new development from scratch. But while they are an important sector, they will dry up quickly leaving Informix once again with no new sales. My suspicion then is that Informix will try to milk what money they can from this group and when the inital wave dies down they will then move to a free or nearly free run-time policy and hopefully cheaper development cost. If they don't then I don't see much more future here.
