RE: Enterprise Replication

A few tidbits on Informix Enterprise Replication: Using SNMP for changing the syscdr tables is shakey and has caused alot of problems Informix is dropping* snmp for this reason in 7.3. (*SNMP will however continue to be used for monitoring replication in 7.3). The "where" statements used with different combinations of primary/target and conflict resolution are flakey. Don't assume too much in your design or you will get burned (try out what you are planning). Data Synchronization is a very big hole that must be filled using a very thin set of options usually by brute force. Don't expect any significant help from Informix until well after 7.3, although they may get HPL to bypass replication by 7.3. 7.3 will include an enhanced replication manager that makes it more practical to define and manipulate/capture large numbers of servers and replicates. 7.3 will include supported line commands. 7.3 will include hierarchical replication. The clever way they are planning to do it really only impacts server definition and not replicates. One change is that the entire global catalog (syscdr database) will not be on every server. I personally like the way ER is architected. It works pretty well. But as with any product, there is alot of room for improvement.
