We suffered from the same problem, Informix Tech support suggested we try a shell other than Bourne but this did not help us. They also said that they had cases of the problem where installing to one filesystem had worked when it wouldn't on another - despite both having enough space. We added a new filesystem on an unused partition which then took the installation without complaint. Of course this isn't much help if you don't have any other filesystems, but thats all i can suggest.
