scrolling display in a window?

neophyte question... if I open a window, and make it current, display "msg" at 2,1 will display on the second line of the window. display "msg" will scroll at the bottom of the screen. Given this, it appears that if I have many displays to go in a window, I have to figure out the scrolling myself. Is there any way to make plain unadulterated displays scroll in the current window?
