Re: SE and runtime users

I doubt anyone at Informix realy wants to explain this use of words. It was orignially introduced when NewEra 1.0 came out. They didn't want to call it runtime because that was in the PC-bussiness assosiated with a cheap or most often free peace of code you needed to install a product made with some development system. They tried to call it a "deployment library" instead to be able to charge more. The argument at the time went that NewEra compiled to executable machine code, as opposed to PowerBuilder, Visual Basic and others that only generated interpreted code. NewEra, it was said, was so much more efficient than these other tools that you could save more on cheaper hardware than you had to pay for the "deployment library" if you used NewEra instead of other tools. The sad thing for Informix is it all turned out to be the other way arround. You realy needed more powerfull hardware for NewEra applications than if you used some compeeting tools, or at least the same level of hardware. Even if it had been true, in very many cases the hardware decisision would be made more or less independent of NewEra, so the argument didn't hold up except for some large customers who wanted to "deploy" NewEra applications as the main applications on large number of PC's. The origninal runtime (or "deployment library") price was something like US$ 450, which was luckily reduced after a short time. It's still far too expensive though for many applications which unnecessarily limits the market for NewEra. There should at least be a NewEra light with no application partitioning (where all partitioned code had to run on the same machine) with a free runtime. So development is development, and "deployment" is runtime for production users only. I haven't seen Informix using "deployment" for anything but NewEra. cherylk@prod1.jcdc.doleta.gov (Cheryl Kendricks) wrote: :On all 7.X I have received for my ONLINE engine (NewEra Products). If you :have NewEra you will see this "Development" and "Deployment". So yeah in a :way I stated incorrectly because on ONLINE it's essentially always :"RUNTIME". This naming is more for the TOOLS from what I can tell. Hey :Informix If you read this please explain it (the customer rep, I last :talked to couldn't either). My great Informix Sales Rep had to conference :me with an SE just to get it clarified with me. It was really confusing :for my VCL software since I had only 1 of EACH (a Development and :Deployment).
