Re: Informix in the press...

I know clearly what happened with the IDS download and the IIUG - both times this issue came up, it was vetoed by the IIUG president. Two different IBM resources worked very hard to get a "bomb-free" copy of IDS to post on the download sites. One was the IBM liason to the board at the time, the other the IDS product manager. In both cases, the IIUG president, Stuart Litel, vetoed doing the download the way that the 2 IBM resources had worked up. The first time, there was quite the argument about "users will not want to fill out forms to get the download...", and the idea went away. The IBM liason very shortly after left that post as she was very frustrated to have worked hard for many months to get a version that was available to the IIUG members, only to hit heavy resistance. The second time the "bomb-free" version was proposed by the at the time IDS product manager, again, Stuart vetoed it. I really can't remember the reason why now, but I'm sure it will surface in this thread eventually. So in either case, IBM had offered a bomb-free download, only to get resistance from the IIUG president. I was there on both occassions, and if someone wants more detail, please contact me. I can get quotes from both resources if necessary. I encourage the Informix community to press the IIUG board for answers on this. As Neil stated, he did press for answers, but did not get any. You know, regardless of all the detail being argued about concerning this topic, the bottom line is simple....there is STILL no bomb-free offering via the IIUG to the Informix community. Is this true, or did I miss that announcement somewhere? If not, why not? Mark, Thanks for the information and background! I am still not sure why a bomb-free version is not available outside the IIUG. Can this also have some light shed on it? I don't need the IIUG to provide me with IDS, I simply want to download a bomb-free version from IBM. And quite honestly, when one looks at the competition, it baffles me why this is such an issue in today's market. By the way, for what it's worth, check this out: http://dev.mysql.com/ For those of you who think mysql is a joke, a few more releases and this product will be on a par with Informix, and without a time-out, license requirements, any of the nonsense put out by Christine or anyone else at IBM or the IIUG. It's not what _I_ say, it's out there standing on its own. Oracle offers theirs from otn.oracle.com and Microsoft hosts their own and so does IBM with DB2. Why is Informix different? -- Daniel A. IBM did not need IIUG to offer it. IIUG made a special request to IBM to provide them with an EXCLUSIVE non-time bombed version for member download. IBM did. IIUG failed to offer it to members because of IBM's requirement to register for downloads of it's software. I spoke with a senior IBM manager on Friday and asked that IBM look at offering the download themselves. As I stated in another post, the license does restrict use to IIUG members (again this was put in to provide IIUG a benefit not for any other reason and I did not feel it was too onerous since IIUG membership is no charge). Eventually, IBM could re-work the license, but that would take at a minimum until the next fixpack (the license has to get linked in).
