RE: UNIX group 'informix' (Was - Re: Passwords)

I usually stay out of this conversation, but for some reason this time I have decided to put in my $.02. We have been running for years with every programmer/administrator in the informix group (as their primary group). I can tell you for certain that it has zero effect on UNIX or the engine. All of our applications are created in group informix. This has NEVER caused ANY problem whatsoever. It has on occasion been of slight advantage. Such as being able to edit the onconfig file without having to su - informix. When we were using standard engine (many moons ago) it helped even more whenever we had to do some funky manipulations of the actual table and index files. I say, "If you have competent programmers there is no reason not to take advantage of group informix." I've never thought of any reason not to use the group other than security, but if you have the root password then security isn't really an issue. What effects - if any - does this have on the Informix engine, the UNIX operating system, etc? I am running Informix Universal Server (9.14) on a SUN SPARCstation-5 with Solaris 2.5.1 Thanks in advance, Avi. -- /\\ \\ /| Avi Abrami, Analyst/Programmer, Telegate Ltd. /__\\ \\ / | 7 Haplada Street, Or-Yehuda, ISRAEL / \\ \\/ | Phone:+972-3-5388717 Fax:+972-3-5335877 eMail:avia@telegate.co.il
