How2 Toggle Read-Only SQL Access?

Hi Folks, We have a cheap informix clone (infoflex/sqlflex) on which we need to take a snapshot. We'd like to allow continuous selects (read-only) while disabling any state-changing queries (select/update/etc) so we can create a snapshot. I can imagine doing this via priviledge granting/revoking. How is this typically done among the DBA-savvy? Cheers. -----------== Posted via Deja News, The Discussion Network ==---------- http://www.dejanews.com/ Search, Read, Discuss, or Start Your Own
Hi,
Sorry I have no knowledge of Informix Clones, the following is the method
you would take in informix.
Within informix if you wanted to do such a thing you could use a tool called
dbexport, however this will lock the database in exclusive mode.
If you still wanted to allow select permissions but nothing else you would
need to revoke the user privilages on the tables, just leaving select
privilage and subsequently perform your extraction.
Following the extraction you would then regrant the privilages. This can
all be automated via shell scripts.
This is an area often faced, hence within Informix there is no problem with
taking an Informix Archive as this utilises the page time stamps and
subsequent logical logs.

Sean
