I think you'll find that first of all you need to clip all variables that contain a PCL command to be on the safe side and secondly, you need to (-hic-) start specifying the actual column position that you wish to print at e.g. print "^[*p100X", l_variable which will print the variable (-hic-) l_variable 100 points across on the page. (I'm assuming you are printing on a printer similar to a HP laser jet 4000 ) You also need to select a non-proportional font and combine the command for that with a command similar to the one above.
