NEW ERA
Posted in 1999
A poster asked whether Informix NewEra offers better query performance than SE or Dynamic Server, whether its language differs, and whether existing 4GL programs could be migrated to it. The key answer: NewEra is not a database engine at all but an object-oriented development environment (a GUI front end), so it has no bearing on query speed; its language is different, and migrating 4GL code is theoretically possible but impractical. Respondents noted NewEra was being desupported, then argued over its quality — some calling v2 shoddy and unstable, others reporting stable, productive use (especially 2.2, or with dchSoftware's NEWT class library) and regretting its discontinuation. No further resolution beyond that advice.

What is the perfomance of Informix New Era?. It has better performance in queries than Standart Engine or Dinamic Server. Is diferent his language source? Could we migrate the programs 4GL of Standard Engine to New Era? If someone know something please write to me Thanks

New Era is NOT a database engine but a development environment like Dynamic 4GL. It was an attempt to develop an Object Oriented version of 4GL. Stay far far away from this tool. Many a good man has been broken. ignacio <ib308166@public.ibercaja.es> wrote in message news:376FE927.2A54@public.ibercaja.es... > What is the perfomance of Informix New Era?. > It has better performance in queries than Standart Engine or Dinamic > Server. > Is diferent his language source? > Could we migrate the programs 4GL of Standard Engine to New Era? > If someone know something please write to me > Thanks >
New Era is one tool that if you ever try working on, you will never ever want to work with another "so-called" Object Oriented Development environments with the exception of VC++. Having worked on New Era for nearly 4 years now, I still have to come across another tool that even comes close to allowing fast and easy development, especially for an Informix database. It is a pity that Informix had to go thru a financial stupidity which actually meant the doom for New Era. Once the learning curve is crossed, which is expected for programmers moving form 4GL to an OOP paradigm, I, and all the teams I have worked with, have found that New Era was the best choice an organization could make for a GUI front end for an Informix Database. Do you mean using SuperTables ? Not a good thing if wanting to do a 3-tier development. > It is a pity that Informix had to go > thru a financial stupidity which actually meant the doom for New Era. With the addition of dchSoftware's NEWT class library that is. Otherwise the graphical interface is quite poor !! > > > Art S. Not the New Era I work with, V2. Shoddy product, untested, unstable, unintegrated. Saw V3 - looked ok but of course too little to late. I recognize New Era has been roundly maligned by many competent developers; however, my own experience with New Era 2.2 (2.1 was buggy) has been highly successful, running with Informix 5.x engines. Speed, reliability, memory usage have been excellent -- our production code has been extremely stable on both the Win95 and Win98 platforms. I have evaluated potential replacement IDE's, such as Java based products, including Visual Cafe, and found them vastly inferior to New Era. I am very disappointed that New Era was discontinued and hope Informix will sell it to a company that will fix the major bugs and revive the product. Probably when hell freezes over ... instead we have Dynamic 4GL, a transitional tool with serious limitations.
