You don't mention product or version, but we can guess OnLine or IDS. Why not use OnTape (TbTape) or OnBar? If you are using IDS 7.3x and really must use cpio, then you can perform an external backup. You need to use onmode -c block before copying your raw disks. Then onmode -c unblock after you have finished. You can then use OnBar to restore an external backup.
