Fixed length fields

Hello, A colleague is looking for a way to use SQL (not 4GL), to download fixed length fields without delimeters. Any pointers qould be useful. Also, the reverse, is there any way to get fixed length fields without delimeters into Informix, without using incredibly complex Unix formatting commands?
