Informix data types varchar and blobs both support variable length text. The blobs (TEXT) type can store up to 2Gb of data in a single field. Who told you Informix wasn't a suitable database? Both these data types are supported in the Informix Online engine but not in the SE engine (smaller and cheaper alternative engine from Informix). In 4GL you can easily chop up a page of text entered using WORDWRAP into lines of text and number them automatically. It's a bit crude I admit but will manage very large amounts of text efficiently in the database. If you store text as a group of pages (each in a detail record) then you start to get inefficient use of data space when pages aren't full. If your note fields have a manageable size, 500 chars say, then why not simply use a char(500) field? Enter it and view it via fields with WORDWRAP enabled and you've got decent functionality for a character based interface. -- Gary Rooksby aa46@dial.pipex.com
