Local database, Oracle server, Supercard and forms
Posted in 1996
HI, I am working on a project called PREDICT (Petroleum Ressource Evaluation, Data, Information, Concepts and Templates). The project was already partly developped when I arrived, using a Mac, Allegiant SuperCard and oracle 5 local database system stack 1.2 for hyperCard 1.5. Because oracle 5 local database is rather old now, I have come accross several problems while using it on recent macs, not mentionning the 24 bits addressing problem. So we wanted to migrate to a more recent database. But the targets of the project have evolved : Now PREDICT should be cross-platform and should be composed of Macs and PCs, an oracle 7 server which is accessed via a TCP/IP network, a local SQL database, Allegiant SuperCard (to display templates, maps, cross sections, etc) and a forms/frontend to the databases. (I can send you an assessement of PREDICT needs if you had like to see what's needed) One of the problems is that the external commands which enable SuperCard to access local databases has been obsoleted by oracle and it is only available in an Oracle 6.0 environment which I can not find. Because the amout of scripts already written using SuperCard is huge, we do not want to move from SuperCard unless we can easily migrate to another product with little efforts... starts to be complicated... :-) So let's summarize : - we want all of the products to be cross-platform (Mac/PC); - we want to stay with the multimedia authoring tool SuperCard unless it is not too complicated and not too time consuming to migrate to another product; - we want a local SQL database accessible by SuperCard (or other if we migrate) which uses external commands (xcmds) close to the ones used with oracle 5 so we can migrate with little efforts. Import and export from/to Oracle 7 server should be easy, using files or direct access (this would be a great advantage); - we want a front-end product which enables quick-and-easy creation of forms to update and insert data in both the local database and the oracle 7 server. In fact we are looking for a product of type Microsoft Access 2 with its "wizards" but with improved security (it should not be able to save the password locally as some information is confidential). Here we go! Any help will be greatly appreciated! -- ******************************************************************* Emmanuel SCIARA AGSO, Anzac Parade tel : (06) 249 9721 GPO Box 378 fax : (06) 249 9983 Canberra ACT 2601 _--_|\\ / \\ Australian Geological Survey Organisation \\_.--\\_* Canberra v ******************************************************************* -- ******************************************************************* Emmanuel SCIARA AGSO, Anzac Parade tel : (06) 249 9721 GPO Box 378 fax : (06) 249 9983 Canberra ACT 2601 _--_|\\ / \\ Australian Geological Survey Organisation \\_.--\\_* Canberra v *******************************************************************
