There is no 1-byte integer type. I don't know why. But I do know that
it's not much of a problem unless you have really huge amounts of data.
Disks just keep getting bigger and faster.
Try this:
CREATE TABLE mytable
(
mycol SMALLINT,
CHECK (mycol BETWEEN -254 AND 255) CONSTRAINT mycol_1byte
)
