How many can he run when he has to launch a shell, run date and exit a shell? I bet his fingers can't do that 44 times :-). Being sensible for a moment, the overhead of opening a shell can be quite high on some boxes and as that is what the SPL has to do, it's possible that is what may be causing part of your problem. Plus you have the overhead of the SPL checker and SPL interpreter to deal with. Roll on compiled SPL with full NewEra style 4GL++.
