One thing to watch out for with shared libraries --- There can be quite a bit of added instructions generated because of the position independent requirements. This is especially true if there 'c' code tends to have a lot of function calls as opposed to being 'in-line'. It can be quite an eye-opener to take a fairly simple program and compile with -s -k pic options and compare the assembler output with a non -k pic version. This is why a lot of sites have noticed such a difference in 4gl programs with -share vrs -static.
