Informix converts data type automatically and invisibly. In ESQL/C or 4GL just select INTO an integer and if the string is convertable to an integer it will be. If not a numeric conversion error will be reported. Using dynamic SQL in ESQL/C you can explicitely tell the engine what conversions you want in 4GL and fixed ESQL/C the conversions are implied.
