Solaris hostname resolution scheme consults /etc/nsswitch.conf. If you are using NIS, then the /etc/nsswitch.conf will be copied to /etc/nsswitch.conf. If you are fond of DNS, you can use DNS along with NIS or NIS+. To use DNS, you need to create /etc/resolv.conf to include your domainname and nameserver. You can also use /etc/hosts. Ex: 1- Use NIS exclusively cp /etc/nsswitch.nis /etc/nsswitch.conf 2- Use NIS and DNS (/etc/resolv.conf) and file (/etc/hosts) - cp /etc/nsswith.nis /etc/nsswitch.conf - Modify hosts field of /etc/nsswitch.conf to include DNS and files ... hosts: files dns nis [NOTFOUND=return] The order of search and control statements are from left to right - Remember to create /etc/resolv.conf for DNS This is more a sysadmin question than dba one. However, I figure that some one in this group might be interested in the topic.
