Some true stories (really - they all happened to *ME*, not someone I know or heard of!) 1) Manager of department sticks his head into my office and says: "Could you please make some photostats for me." I say, pointedly: "The photostat machine is over there" He says, "Yes but I might press the wrong button and break the computer system" 2) User phones up: "I've just been given a printer and I've plugged it in and it doesn't work. It prints the test pattern ok, so what's wrong?" Me: "Is it plugged in at both ends?" Her: "Yes" Me: "Press PrtScr" Her: "Nothing happens" Me: "Sure it's plugged in?" Her: "Yes" Me: "Phone the supplier" <conversation abbreviated to carry over the salient points. I often surprise myself with my patience with end users> 10 minutes later. Her: "I've phoned the supplier, and he says the printer is fine." Me: "Oh. Are you *SURE* it's plugged in properly." Her: "Well it is plugged in, but it doesn't fit properly. None of the metal teeth seem to be touching anything." Me: "Ungggh" <Heart attack> 3) Same user: "Hello. I've type in a whole lot of entries and now I can't find any of them. Only the first one." <"Entries" are a detail record to the main, or header record> Me: "Ok, let's go through it together. Give me the main record no you're looking at. OK, now from the main menu press F for Find, type in that number and press Escape" Her: "There, you see, it's always the same entry that comes up, none of the others" Me: "Do you have a different menu now starting off with Next?" Her: "Yes" Me: "Press N for Next ..." Her: "Oh wonderful. You're a darling!" <hangs up> Kinda makes you wonder why we bother, doesn't it? Regards, billy.wheeler@digitec.co.za --- . SPEED 1.40 [NR] .
