That formula may be close, but the exact calculations can be found in the _Informix Guide to SQL_, in the Data Types section (pp. 3-15ish for v7.1). In fact, you can't just use the collength -- doesn't this include the maximum and minimum as the high and low bytes (or vice versa)? Looks like it does to me. Wonder where the exact length /is/ stored...? -Richard
