Holiday Greetings
Answered: grey (solid confidence) — Holiday-greetings social thread that turns into an off-topic religious/cultural argument; no technical question.

Not a technical thread at all. Art Kagel posted a generic season's greetings to the Informix community, and the replies turned into a debate over why he wrote "Happy Holidays" rather than "Merry Christmas" — touching on his being Jewish, the meaning of "Christ", and complaints from a previous year about leaving out other faiths. There are a couple of joking jabs comparing Informix and Oracle features (row-level locking, online backups), but no actual problem is raised and no technical resolution is recorded. Safe to skip.

To the entire Informix community: Happiest of holidays to you all, whatever and however you celebrate. If you don't celebrate any special holiday this time of year, then just enjoy the weather! ;-) And to all: A good year! Art -- Art S. Art has principles, what can I say? The thing is, being "the Christ" has a very specific meaning and since a (serious) Jew doesn't believe "the Christ" has come yet, a Jew can't wish someone "Merry Christ-mas". I, on the other hand, have no problem calling you a pompous cunt. It's well within *my* religion. -- Cheers, Obnoxio The Clown http://obotheclown.blogspot.com
First: If the man existed (and that's not to say that I believe that he did not) Yehoshua son of Yoseph and Miryam was not a king, nor did anyone crown him ('cristos' is Greek for crowned), and I do not believe that he was the messiah. So, no I would not use the name "Christ" when referring to the "man of Galilee", though I will usually allow that using the Latin version of his name is OK with me. Neither do I normally use the word Christmas preferring rather to use Xmas. As far as why I did not just wish those who celebrate it "Merry Christmas"... I did so last year. Wishing everyone a Merry Xmas and/or Happy Chanukah. The result of that was a three day discussion on this list about my having left out Kwanza and besides that having insulted the worlds Atheists, Budhists, Moslems, Hindus, Seiks, etc. I guess, to paraphrase Lincoln, you can't please all the people all the time. I tried. Get over it. FYI Daniel, I am ABSOLUTELY positive that Jesus of Nasaruth NEVER said Merry Christmas either! So if it isn't your birthday you can't say "Happy Birthday" either I presume. Now that you've excluded 67% of the people on the planet from saying those words. Next, no doubt, you should start a discussion of which denominations are "REAL" Christians and can say the two words and which are not. You cast the first stone so it seems only fair to let you cast the second and the third. -- Daniel A. Morgan
