just to confirm adding a chunk on HDR
Posted in 2009
The poster asked whether his plan to add a 2GB chunk to a dbspace in an HDR pair was correct, specifically whether the secondary would pick up a symlink with a different name than the primary's. Respondents (Javier Gomez, Marcus Haarmann, Madison Pruet, Nilesh Ozarkar, Art Kagel) agreed the steps were fine except that the symlink path/name must be identical on primary and secondary (the underlying raw devices can differ); links should be owned by informix:informix with mode 660, and several advised putting links outside /dev (e.g. /db or under the informix home) since /dev can be rebuilt at boot. The poster thanked them, so the question was resolved.

Hi All,
Just want to confirm what i'm going to do in adding a chunk into HDR setup.
1. on primary IDS, create a link on raw device in primary
$ ln -sf /dev/rawdevice1 /dev/ids.chunk4
2. on secondary IDS(replica), create a link on raw device in secondary.
$ ln -sf /dev/rawdevice3 /dev/ids.chunk10
3. on primary server, do this command using informix..
onspaces -a dbspacexx -p /dev/ids.chunk4 -o 0 -s 2048000 (add 2GB chunk ondbspace dbspacexx)
is that all? does the /dev/ids.chunk10 (on Sec server) will automatically
picked up even has different name?
Thanks and Regards,
Hello,
you can not have different chunk names (paths) in a HDR pair.

Hi,
in HDR you need to have identical chunk names (so the link destination
should be ids.chunk4 on both machines).
All the devices must be chown informix:informix and chmod 660, before
you add the chunk.
Generally, I would place the link destinations in a separate dir from
/dev (like /dbs), cause /dev will be regenerated
at boot time depending on the OS.

Yes --- as a rule avoid using /dev/ to create the chunks....

You will need to set up a link and use the link to create the chunk ---=
and
the link name must be the same on the primary as is on the secondary.
So what you could do is somthink like...
ln -ls /dev/rawdevice1 /db/rawchunk
on the primary and
ln -ls /dev/rawdevice4 /db/rawchunk
on the secondary.
And finally use onspaces -c rawchunk /db/rawchunk.....

No - The chunks on each server must have the same path names.

You have to make the link path/name identical on the two servers (so use
/dev/ids.chunk4 on both machines), otherwise you are good to go.
Personally I wouldn't put the links into /dev, I would put them under the
parent of the IDS installation directory or under the informix login/home
directory. But that's a preference only.
