Re: MS-ACCESS as a client front-end?-Yes it works

Regarding MS Access as a front end for Informix. It depends on the level of client server that you want to get into. Multi-tiered client server is definitely out, Access has no ability to partition operations across servers. In terms of 2 tier client server Access does however provide excellent functionality, a very fast development environment and an excellent report writer. By the use of pass-thru queries and stored procedures an environment can be built that is the equal of anything that can be built in powerbuilder or SQlWindows. Bearing in mind that neither of these applications support partitioning either. many of the problems that people will have experienced with using MS Access to frontend Informix is not due to Access but rather the ODBC driver. Intersolve ODBC over I-NET is a crock. Trying to run Access over this configuration is an absolute nightmare. Switch your ODBC driver to OpenLink. Bypass I-net completely and the stability of applications in Access goes up 500%. As to speed, yes it is fast. If you are having a problem with speed, check your dataset selection, it could be lan traffic that is your problem (which has nothing to do with the frontend tool).
