IDS 7.31 resize drop and recreate new logical logs
Posted in 2013
A user on IDS 7.31 wanted to replace small logical logs with larger ones and asked whether this requires reinitialising the instance and whether the server must be quiescent. The answer: no reinitialisation/rebuild is needed - add the new, larger logs with onparams (not onmonitor), take a level-0 backup to activate them, then drop the old logs. However, onparams -a/-d on 7.31 does require quiescent mode (confirmed by the poster's "must be in quiescent mode" errors); only later versions allow it online. Several replies also urged upgrading from 7.31.

Hi All, I am having problem on our OLD IDS 7.31. I would like to drop the smaller logical logs and create new bigger logical logs. Here are my inquiries: 1. I read a book "Informix Survival Guide" and it says that resizing the logical logs in 7.31, the DB needs to be re-initialized? is it true? Does this mean, i need to rebuild the DB from scratch again? 2. Does 7.31 IDS, needs to be in "Quiescent" mode in order to add/remove logical logs? in IDS 9.4 up, i didn't set the DB instance in Quiescent mode. I need your help badly.. thanks,
I don't remember having to bring the engine to quiescent just to add logical logs in 7.31 and earlier and as far as I remember you could always just add new logs of a different size then drop the old ones. There was a point before which you had to take an archive to activate new logs, but IB that was earlier than 7.31. Art Art S. Really? You would be very happy to upgrade to a newer version, mainly because of performance benefits, and also the new features you could use. Consider this, IDS 7.31 is tooooooooooooooo old. Thanks Art,
Here's what i've got when i tried to add logical log:
=> onstat -
IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 7.31.FD8X5 -- On-Line
=> onstat -d|grep " 2 "700000050081f28 2 1 2 1 N informix logdbs01
700000050080f38 2 2 0 524287 24234 PO- /dev/logdbsl01
This is the error i've got:
=> onparams -a -d logdbs01 -s 10000
IBM Informix Dynamic Server must be in quiescent mode.
I tried to drop log number 10, but getting the same error:

IBM Informix Dynamic Server must be in quiescent mode.
Quiescent mode is all the users currently connected will be disconnected.
Getting old and forgetful I guess. I agree with Jack BTW past time to
relicense and upgrade.

Thanks Art. I really appreciate your time and effort replying to multiple inquiries here in iiug. I'll check all the options from the business side. Best Regards, Jack

Yes you can add logical logs of different sizes thru onparams not
onmonitor that onlu allows you do that based on the initial log size;
you have to do a backup (ontape or onbar) to make the new logs
available for use.
However, you need to be in Quiescent mode to do that in IDS 7.31.
In newer versions, adding a logical log can be done online without
needing to be in quiescent mode.
