isql vs dbaccess
Posted in 1999
User asked whether isql was replaced by dbaccess in Informix v6.01 4GL RDS. Responses clarified that dbaccess replaced isql for most functionality except forms, reports, and user menus—features unique to isql. Isql was never part of the RDS product. Thread also discussed isql availability on Linux, though this sparked debate about Informix's marketing and distribution strategies.

I would like a confirmation on this:
I have intalled v6.01 of the informix-4gl RDS and
the isql utility was not among the programs.
Does this mean isql has been replaced by dbaccess ?
Besides forms, does dbaccess cover the same
functionnality that isql does ?
Thanks,
Chris

dbaccess replaced ISQL for everything except forms.
ISQL is still a great tool, and we hope someday to
see it on Linux.
There is also additional functionality in dbaccess that
is not found in ISQL, except for ISQL's form-runner.

Basically the same functionality can be found in dbaccess
as ISQL without forms, with additional features for the
newer engines.

ISQL is available on Linux today. It can be ordered, etc.
Ditto for I4GL, I4GL-RDS, I4GL-ID. I've only said it twice
so far, so it isn't yet an established truth, but it is
supposed to be available, and has been for over a week.
If you haven't seen any announcement and need to see one to
believe me, then that's your prerogative, but you may wait in vain;
there are politics around it which prevent it from being treated
as other than a routine port, and Informix doesn't routinely
announce routine ports.

No. ISQL comes with Informix-SQL. It provides the
forms and reports and user menus which are not part
of DB-Access. ISQL has a primitive (early) version
of the query language, database and table building
options that are handled better by DB-Access.

[SNIP] No announcement but this is covered in the Linux FAQ online in the IDN Linux Corner if one needs the OFFICIAL word (as if Jonathan is not official enough). Art S. Kagel
Jonathan Leffler wrote: > > ISQL is available on Linux today. It can be ordered, etc. Jonathan, not your fault I'm sure but: I4GL should be available as a download. I should not have to contact a sales monkey for a CD of something that should be delivered with the engine(s). I downloaded the engines for Linux, it's a no-brainer to download 4GL. In fact 4GL should have been packaged with the latest Linux offerings. Informix missed a big opportunity to reach a lot of new INFORMIX developers. By forcing people to go through the zoo with bananas they missed out on widening the developer community at a time when this is so crucial to the future of Informix. I know plenty of developers who will not bother with calling their sales office. > Ditto for I4GL, I4GL-RDS, I4GL-ID. I just happened to stop by this newsgroup and would have never known about ISQL or the others being available for Linux--except for I4GL--had this thread not been started. We got a trickle of info over in our linux-informix mailing list, but even that wasn't much. Maybe someday the knuckle dragging politicians at your company will be removed so your company can compete in a timely manner. Most of the products for Linux are way late to market--if at all--and there is no marketing plan at all. I'm convinced Diane Fraiman has done little for the money, perhaps a talent search should start soon to get someone in that can get things moving. She's been with the company, what almost a year, and what have we seen? Very little. A lot of money on an exec who ain't producing much. > If you haven't seen any announcement and need to see one to > believe me, then that's your prerogative, but you may wait in vain; > there are politics around it which prevent it from being treated > as other than a routine port, and Informix doesn't routinely > announce routine ports. > Amazing. It's absolutely amazing. Linux ports were the marketing opportunity of the decade and Informix missed the boat and didn't even bother to make some press over it. Instead, in their stuffed shirt style they spite their face by cutting off the nose. Rather than listen to the end-user community and do some publicity and advertising they release it with a whimper. What a bunch of losers in the marketing department. Absolutely a no-talent bunch. <snip> > -- > Jonathan Leffler (jleffler@informix.com, jleffler@earthlink.net) > Guardian of DBD::Informix v0.60 -- see http://www.perl.com/CPAN > #include <disclaimer.h> It's quite clear what I'd do if I ran Informix. Imagine the cost savings I could bring by the firings of all the politicians and lopping off of dead weight in the marketing department. :-) Think about it Informix: The more focus developers put on YOUR products the less focus they put on your competition. This means, in simpleton terms, make your products KNOWN and EASY to get a hold of so that the widest possible audience can get their hands on it. Hey, why not try marketing where your competition markets, and using the same venues for distribution, i.e. the web so that developers can support your company. Sales monkeys are completely unnecessary for this. This is something you OWE your developer community, not an option. They go to bat for you, the least you can do is provide the decency of a prompt response, adequate advertising, and easy access to tools and products. ISQL was never part of RDS, or any other 4GL product.

Only ISQL has forms (Perform), reports (Ace), and User-menus.
