SDS question
Posted in 2009
Question: with IDS 11.50 SDS (shared-disk secondaries) on Solaris, restarting the primary forces all SDS secondaries offline, unlike HDR where the secondary stays up. Answers explain this is by design: SDS nodes share the disk and all read the logs, so if the primary restarts and runs startup recovery the secondaries must shut down. The workaround given (Madison Pruet, echoed by Art Kagel and Nilesh Ozarkar) is to switch roles instead of simply restarting: run 'onmode -d make primary' on an SDS node to promote it, restart the old primary (it comes up as an SDS secondary), then move the primary role back with 'onmode -d make primary'. That avoids recovery and keeps the cluster online. Art also questioned the need for weekly restarts.

If primary server goes down, then you should promote one of the SDS ser= ver to be a new primary, and other SDS servers will connect to the new prim= ary automatically. Then (if needed), you can restart the old primary as an = SDS server provided you have the SDS parameters set in its onconfig file. My question was - if primary in SDS pair is restarted (e.g. weekly
reboot) is there a way for me to prevent secondary shutting down as
well.
At this moment, I don't want to promote my secondary server to
primary. It's just regular instance restart, but as primary is
restarting I would like secondary staying online.
As in HDR pair, if primary instance is restarted, secondary stays up
and running and after oninit on primary they reconnect.
Thanks,
Ljiljana

With SDS - all of the servers are processing the logs. If the primary
should fail and you simply restart it, then you will run into problems
because the primary will have to go through recovery. You need to
continue the original process. That means you need to first make one o=
f
the remaining SDS nodes primary by running "onmode -d make primary". T=
hen
when you restart the original primary, you would first need to start it=

retransition the role of primary back to the original primary by again
running onmode -d make primary....

Guess I need to explain just a bit better....
We need to prevent recovery from happening in order to not have to shut=
down all of the SDS servers. If recovery should happen then the SDS no=
des
will be forced to shut down. By switching the role of primary from one=
node to another node, even just for a short period of time, then we don=
't
have to go through the startup recovery phase.
So if you have two nodes A, and B, and A and B are sharing the same dis=
k
system, then the process if A should fail would be.
1) make B into primary (onmode -d make primary....XXX_B)
2) bring up A (it will automatically come up as an SDS secondary)
3) Make A back into the primary (onmode -d make primary ... XXX_A)
That way no server will be forced to go into startup recovery.
