Statement freed at char to num conversion error

I am having a problem with error recovery with Informix Online. I am creating a dynamic SQL statement. After preparing the statement (and preparing a cursor), if I execute the statement using improper values (character strings instead of numbers). The statement fails, as expected, but when I try to re-execute the statement I get a -412 error (command pointer is null). Apparently, the statement has been freed! Why? Having to re-prepare the statement is a major headache for my code. Has anyone else run into this problem? I am using a somewhat dated version of Informix (5.03UC1 on HPUX 9.04).
