I read the 32bit enterprise edition of server 2003 could address up to 32Gb
of RAM if the PAE switch is used?
(memory limits: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa366778.aspx )
But the application has to be aware of how to use it - something about
'largeaddressaware' flag when compiled... not sure where ids stands on this.
IDS 11.5 plays a lot nicer with windows when using large memory (however I
only have experience with up to 4GB on standard edition) - one feature
particularly nice is the onconfig parameter SHMNOACCESS - in case Microsoft
release a patch that puts a system dll in the way of the memory your
database is trying to use, with this you can stop ids trying to use this
piece of memory until Microsoft releases a hotfix - 'hnetcfg.dll' seems to
be the only dll at the moment (service pack 2) still turning up in a bad
location (hotfix article KB948656).
The /3GB flag just increases the user space by an extra gigabyte, but if ids
can address all that extra memory above 4GB then it probably could be left
out, as using it does reduce some kernel space for things like NonPaged pool
and system PTE's. If it does turn out IDS is limited to the 4GB then using
the /3GB flag gives you about 2.7GB memory for IDS.
If running only IDS on this machine then a paging file of 2046MB is probably
fine - our production server is set higher but it barely touches the page
file anyway.
