Table auditing

Hi, if a certain row is updated in a table I want to know who did it. Rather than writing a program to do this, I'm trying to use auditing on the table. Unfortunately the log file generated is binary, but by using "strings" on it I can see that it stores the user-id. Has anyone developed a tool to analyse the data in this file or can someone tell me the layout of this file?
