8 bit problem

I am running the Informix 7.22 Online with GLS (Traditional Chinese). Recently, I have to transfer an old database to our server. But I alwayse met the 'Illegal Character' or the delimiter problem. I think the problem is due to the 8 bit problem. Can anyone give me suggestion to solve this problem ? Or Can I 'filter' the old database first to delete the illegal characters ? Thanks for help !
