ER & CPU Sizing Question
Posted in 2013
Mark asked how few CPU VPUs (for PVU licensing) a target server needs to run one-way Enterprise Replication as an offsite DR copy of a busy primary (600+ users, 6 CPU VPs, ~12GB of logs/day). Respondents questioned using ER at all, suggesting HDR or RSS as simpler, lower-traffic options, and noted ER needs a key per table (ERKEY column in 11.50+, any unique index in 12.10). Art Kagel's guidance that a replication target should match the primary's resources was accepted; Mark explained ER was chosen because the DR copy will purge old data, and closed the thread with that answer.

Informix 11.50 or 11.70 Ultimate editions / AIX 720 platform. Client wants to implement an offsite DR site using ER one way replication. This implementation will be for DR only, no users will be allowed access to this server. The primary server has about 600+ max concurrent users, 6 cpu vps. Not quite sure on the total amount of transactions per day other than they chew thru about 12 gigs of logs daily. Assume that at some point a table here and there could get out of sync and cdr sync would need to be run. My question is what would be the MINIMUM amount of processers required for ER to function properly ? The client only wants to license the minimum amount of pvu's. Thanks, Mark

Any replication server should be equal to the primary server in its available resources. Art Art S. Mark Are they looking to ER the entire database ? If so the target server needs to be the same as the primary, but why are they no looking at HDR. Much simpler to set up and administer and no need to worry about getting out of sync, probably much less network traffic as well. I'm using ER on 15% of my tables and am running 2 CPU VPs with a similar source system, but it depends on the number of tables and volume of change. Don't forget, for ER, EVERY table you replicate needs a PK defined, may not be an issue for you (but it is for me :-( ) Keith On 14 October 2013 16:49, MARK JALKIEWICZ <mark.jalkiewicz@verizon.net>wrote: > Informix 11.50 or 11.70 Ultimate editions / AIX 720 platform. > > Client wants to implement an offsite DR site using ER one way replication. > This implementation will be for DR only, no users will be allowed access to > this server. No PK needed in the later versions > Mark > > Are they looking to ER the entire database ? If so the target server needs > to be the same as the primary, but why are they no looking at HDR. Right. In 11.50+ you can add the ERKEY column and in v12.10 you can use any unique index. Art Art S. HDR, RSS all considered, but the client's model is that this DR server will only be used as a "temporary stop gap" until an emergency replacement server is delivered and restored via backup tapes that are stored off-site daily. Since this DR server will only serve as a temporary solution, they will be retenting old data ( to save on disk space costs on this DR ) and that retention cannot be applied back to the primary. Art's response seems to be very reasonable. Thanks to all who responded. Mark
