Where can I get an accurate description of the number of bytes required for each Informix type? Thank you, Tony

DESCRIBE is one source. The syscolumns entry for the specific column once you strip the NOT NULL bit off the collen column or decode it (for decimal, interval, and datetime columns) using the macros in incl/esql/*.h is another (except for variable length column types - there you can only determine the max length - and BLOB types - where you can only determine the fixed length portion that resides in the main table body).
